10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ A PRAYER FOR THANKSGIVING DAY Dear God, our Father, eternal, holy, just and merciful to all, Creator and Sustainor of the Universe, Ruler of our lives in Thy Wisdom and Compassion: We adore Thee for this wonderful earth and heavens, for the perfection of Thy ways, for Thy redeeming love revealed in our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, and for Thy eternal presence made known by the Holy Spirit. Our hearts and minds offer unto Thee praise and adoration. We praise Thee for all the spiritual and material benefits we have received. For the quickening power of sunshine and rain, for the abundance of the soil, for food, clothing and shelter, for friendship and love, for our families, for parents and children; and for the sustaining power of our great country conceived in freedom. For all these we have received, we offer Thee the sacrifice of our sincere thanksgiving. We pray for Thy pardon and deliverance from the burden of our transgressions, and we pray Thee to make us pure again from the power of sin. Cause us to live in peace, enrich and inspire us to walk in brotherly love, and enable us to flower justice, compassion and thanksgiving in our hearts. Hear us and heal us, Bless us and keep us, Our God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen Leslie J. Carey--------------o-------------NEW ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE HEIDELBERG CATECHISM The Heidelberg Catechism will enter its four hundredth year as the Reformed Churches throughout the world remember it with anniversary celebrations during 1963. The North American Area Council of the Alliance of Reformed Churches will dedicate its annual conference to the anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism in January, 1963. One of the most significant events connected with this anniversary is the new English translation of the Heidelberg Catechism recently published by the United Church Press. A special committee formed by the North American Area Council of the Reformed Alliance in 1960 worked on this project. Together with Dr. James I. McCord, President of Princeton Seminary, Dr. Allen Miller, professor of Eden Theological Seminary of the United Church of Christ, and Dr. Eugene M. Oosterhaven, professor of Western Seminary of the Reformed Church in America, the pastor of our Roebling Church, Dr. Aladar Komjáthy served on this committee in behalf of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America.----------------------------------o———— World Council Speaks Out On India-China Fighting Officers of the World Council of Churches have assured churches and Christians in India, of “their profound sympathy” at “this critical hour for the life and spirit of India, involved in a struggle to defend its national security.” Signed by the chairman of the 100-member Central Committee, Dr. Franklin Clark Fry, president of the Lutheran Church in America; Dr. Ernest A. Payne, vice-chairman, Baptist, London, England; and Dr. W. A. Visser ’t Hooft, general secretary of the World Council, Geneva, Switzerland, the statement expresses the hope that just and peaceful settlement can be reached. Meanwhile the officers of the Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, a World Council agency, called on world puplic opinion and governments to support withdrawal of Chinese forces to positions held prior to the recent military action and immediate negotiation or arbitration. “The pursuit of territorial claims by aggressive military action rather than by methods of peaceful settlement must be condemned,” said the statement signed by CCIA officers, Dr. O. Frederick Nolde, New York, director of the commission, and Sir Kenneth Grubb, London, chairman. YOUTH FELLOWSHIP NEWS NOTE OF SPECIAL THANKS I sincerely wish to thank the members of the Bethlen Youth Federation, as well as all my many other well wishers for their recent thoughtfulness and kind words during my recent hospitalization and recuperation. May God grant all His blessings! Joseph W. Cookson, Youth Advisor CARTERET On Sunday, October 28, the CYF had a gala, Halloween celebration. Dr. and Mrs. Harsanyi and Mr. and Mrs. Nemish gave the club this party and we all took advantage of the opportunity to have fun — which we did! On November 10, the CYF entertained the congregation at the annual banquet. The show was greatly enjoyed by all, and we had just as much fun rehearsing and performing. This variety show was said to be better than our last one (which was very hard to beat), and if we all remember our dance steps and song lyrics, we will display our talent to the Eastern Classis at our next conference. Nancy Reisz TRENTON The Young People’s Society of Trenton held their annual election of new officers prior to the Bethlen Youth Federation Conference to facilitate conference plans. The new officers are as follows: President ....................... Ron Ture Vice President ............. Julie Jacob Secretary ................... Emily Raho Treasurer ..................... Albert Beke Chaplain .......................... Joe Toth Sergeant of Arms .... Les Martin Sunshine Girl .... Gloria Horvath The Second Annual Variety Show co-sponsored by the Youth Fellowship and the Young People’s Society has been labled a great success and now some of the daring and courageous entertainers have turned their heads, hearts and feet toward the choir loft in preparation for the coming Thanksgiving Day services. Choir practice is held every Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Mrs. Charles Balogh.
