10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ ENGLISH SECTION THE BIBLE In our last month article we stated that we, Reformed Christians, recognize only one authority in the matters of religion: the Bible. This belief of ours will be acceptable and satisfying even for ourselves if we can prove beyond any shadow of doubt that the Bible contains, indeed, the very words, messages of God for our benefit. How can we prove that the Bible is indeed the Word of God? How can we prove that we Reformed Christians teach the truth when we say that although the various parts of the Bible have been written by different writers, yet those writers did not write anything else just what God made them write, inspiring and guiding their minds through the Holy Spirit? That the Bible is just another “worldly” book, it is not difficult to prove. The circumstances of its coming into existence, its preservation up to date in spite of many attempts to completely destroy it, it’s being the all time “best seller” book, can convince the mind even of an unbeliever that the Bible is an extraordinary book. However, it is not enough for us to know that the Bible is an extraordinary book. We want to be convinced that this book is extraordinary for only one reason: that it contains the very words of God. That it is true, the Bible itself proves it first with its “ideas” and “thoughts”, secondly, with that influence, it exerts upon the mind and heart of the Bible-reading man. If you read the Bible, you will realize instantly that the Bible reveals to you ideas and thoughts which could not have their origin in a human mind. For instance in the Bible, from its beginning to its very end, it is revealed that God has an eternal Son who appeared on earth at a certain time in a human body, he was killed like a criminal, yet God for the sufferings and death of his Son is willing to forgive all our sins and to give us eternal life in heaven. From where could the Bible-writing prophets and apostles have received these “unimaginable” ideas if not from God himself who revealed all these to them through the Holy Spirit, in a miraculous way? But nothing proves more excellently that the Bible is the Word of God than the influence it exerts upon the soul of a man. It would be impossible to enumerate all those examples from the history of mankind which serve as testimonies that the Bible was able to make penitent, converted, believing souls out of many a hardened, sin-loving, unbelieving man. From the time of the first Christian martyrs till the present time, the heroes and martyrs of the Christian faith obtained their spiritual strength and consolation only from the Word of God. Their unwavering faith in God and their unchanging loyalty to Jesus Christ has its root and foundation in the Bible. Take, therefore, your Bible into your hands, there is a great treasure in it; God himself wants to speak to you in it. Stephen Kovács LUKEWARM FAITH PART II EVOLUTION Perhaps the best answer lies in the pressures exerted by the social trend and milieu in which we live. The mass of evolution believers know little for the case of evolution per se. They are gullible proponents of a blind faith based on what scientists speak of as fact, universities teach as fact, the public press assumes to be true, and sad as it may seem, many modern clergymen accept as a middle-road, compromise between creation and evolution. Evolution and the Bible collide head-on. Why then have so many accepted it at face value when even from amongst the scholars only the weakest of reasons can be extracted? Consider the statement of Sir Arthur Keith: “Evolution is unproved and unprovable. We believe it only because the only alternative is special creation, and that is unthinkable.” or of D.M.S. Watson of the University of London: “Evolution itself is accepted by zoologists, not because it has been observed to occur or . . . can be proved by logically coherent evidence to be true; but because the only alternative, special creation is incredible.” In other words, they have chosen evolution merely as an alternative to special creation by God. In the main, the evolutionists have relied upon the scientists to uncover the evidence necessary to prove their theories. In this respect science has been most obliging, up to a certain point. Yes, you guessed it, the issue of the missing link. Let us observe that Anthony Standen, in his book, Science Is A Sacred Cow, published in 1950, has to say about it: “It is a most misleading phrase, because it suggests that only one link is missing. It would be more accurate to say that the greater part of the chain is missing, so much that it is not entirely certain whether there is a chain at all.” Where then are the untold innumerable links necessary to connect present day man with a slimy and puddle millions of years ago? The evolutionist must then concede that the first link becomes the missing link; and where is no cornerstone, there remains nothing to build on. So it has been, right down the line. The evolutionists have advanced four classical explanations, each of which has been refuted because of the inability of logical coherent thinking to establish them as valid. It woidd take a great deal of concentrated study to understand the nature of each, however they do deserve honorable mention in the “also-ran” class. Spontaneous Generation — otherwise known as abiogenesis is a highly interesting hypothesis advanced by the biologist to show that living things are produced from inanimate matter. It is difficult to conceive that an atom of steel will evolve into an atom of gold, much less to cenceive that that the
