Wojtilla Gyula: A List of Words Sanskrit and Hungarian by Alexander Csoma de Kőrös.

II. Csoma and Sanskrit Studies

59 these works have been at his disposal. Then there is a reference to his Tibetan dictionary /as Csoma puts it: Tib. Vocab. p. 102/ 6 4. It indicates a time after the issue of this work /1834/. The slightly haphazard character of the manuscript and the diversity of works cited imply that the present manuscript is the fruit of occasional notes. We venture to say therefore that Csoma prepared the various parts of the manuscript between 1832-November 1835. His setting out to Bengal in November 1835 marks the outer limit of this activity. The manuscript mainly deals with lexicography. It contains Sanskrit words with or without Hungarian or English equivalents. There are occasional Hungarian and Latin verses and grammatical notes, Hindi and Tibetan words and passages and the fragment of an analysis of a Tibetan historical work identified by J. Térjék with item No. 27. of Csoma's Tibetan collection. 6 5 The Hungarian verses and longer passages represent special value. These belong to the few writings by Csoma in Hungarian which have come down to us. Some of them escaped the attention of the scholars dealing with Csoma's life and work. These texts together with the Hungarian items of the List of word s show the orthography used by Csoma. Having read these passages, one can guess from Csoma's thoughts and rememberings of Hungary. These texts are as follows: 8a. Az Ánglus mennykövét a vizén dörgeti Tengert s Ámeriká partjait rengeti. És te Pál a' Muszkák rettenetes Czárja Ki előtt térdepel két világ Tatárja, Adjad Uram Isten! lesz még egy időre Hogy sas fog felülni a kakas ülőre. 6 6 ibid. Már elmigyek az örömbe Paraditsomnak kertébe. ^ Leszek Istennek kedvébe. ibid. Intonuere poli crebris micat ignibus ether-Dördül az Égi sarok villámlik az ég gyakor izben. 9a. Élt egy hires Vitéz egykor Éneasnak nevezték Ez Trójából szinte mikor A' Várost elégették, Elébb álla ringy rongyával De sok betsest vitt magával. Jupiter Xantippéiátnl
