PREFACE This booklet comprises another section of the series Vocabularium Ahbreviaturarum Bibliothecarii : part of the volume Index Acronymorum Selectorum, it contains the abbreviations of educational institutions /schools, colleges, pedagogical organisations , etc ./.Concerning the scope of contents, endeavour has been made at a comprehensive treatment of the subject; thus it seemed advisable and expedient to complement the main part of the booklet with two appendices: 1. a selected list of abbreviations of university and other scientific degrees, diplomas and ^ the like; 2. a list of abbreviations of university and other youth organisations. Por practical purposes, Latin and Cyrillic material is treated in separate alphahets here too. As to the method of working out the material of this booklet, it is identical with the former in almost every respect. Abbreviations are followed by resolutions, then - as far as was ascertainable - by the chief town, or possibly country, of the relevant area, then by one or two letters indicating the language of which the abbreviation had been derived. Frequently figuring capital towns are indicated also by one or two letters. In working out the siglae, we have, for uniformity's sake, followed the international practice applied for compilations, i.e. to Use capitals for every word, except for the particles, in the text with Latin letters. Wherever several abbreviations of varying letter value stand for the same organisation , the full description is given for one form only and the sign of equality /=/ refers from the variation to the place where the full description is given. In practice, an abbreviation may appear in various forms but always with the same pattern of letter value /e.g. capitals only, or small letters in part, etc./; it has not been possible to deal with such cases in our compilation and to show all possible variations of form. Since this booklet is intended for library and documentation purposes, it contains not only so-called current abbreviations, but also goes back to the past; however, compilation work of this kind has not been so systematic as that on contemporary material. Considerations of space have, unfortunately , forced us to employ selection in this latter respect as well. Since this booklet is meant primarily for the use of Hungarian specialists Hungarian characteristics have been retained in the alpharbet of Latin letters, i.e. the letters "ö" and "ii" are treated as independent letters and placed after "o" and "u" respectively. So-called diacritical signs have been disregarded in the alphabetical arrange, ment. Abbreviations beginning with the Ukrainian "i" and the Serbian "j" are shown separately in the Cyrillic alphabet as a matter of course. We express the hope that our unpretending booklet will, despite its shortcomings, serve as a useful aid to all who are interested in this field. . t i . , .
