Moravek Endre, Weger Imre: Abbreviaturae Cyrillicae (A MTAK kiadványai 25. Budapest, 1961)

FOREWORD Our dictionary aims at giving librarians and documentaliste in one volume a list of abbreviations of library terms in Cyrillic letters, which otherwise would have to be looked up in various handbooks if they happened to be at hand* Consequently, compiling this book, we have made use of the materials of dictionaries published up to date, completing them with items, originally collected by us. The abbreviations listed have benn proved to exist, and none of them is deduced in a logical way, e.g. Russian abbreviations existing in the same form, and perhaps even with the same meaning in Bulgarian also, are not indicated as Bulgarian, unless we have found evidence of their existence in Bulgarian usage as well. Abbreviations are not listed separately in different languages, » but are arranged in a single — and naturally — Cyrillic alphabetical order. This unified Cyrillic alphabet is as follows: АБВГД]?Е£ЖЗИ11ЙД К Л Jb M H lb ОПРСТЪУУФХЦЧЦШЩЪЫЬЭЮЯ Each abbreviation is followed by the explanation (if the abbreviation is used in several languages — explanations) in à strict alphabetic order with the indication of the language. The letters used for the indication of the languages are listed here: (6) = Bulgarian (p) = Russian (бе) = Belorussian (c) = Serbian (M) - Macedonian (y) = Ukrainian There are also Hungarian, German, and English translation following each explanation. Por the Hungarian translations we have adopted standard Hungarian terms in order to promote the popularization of a unified Hungarian professional terminology. In translating the names of institutions we strove to make clear their character. However, these translations, are, in the main, not official ones,-for looking them up would have required too much effort. In the case of English translations, the dictionaries of abbreviations published by the library of Congress were taken as a model. On the other hand, the translations themselves are — in our view — of less importance. What is essential is the explanation of the abbreviations. 9
