706 used in incantation function: that is all textual tools of magic. Occasional use or inclusion in incantation texts of other folklore genres most often happens with prayer s and with religious blessing s or curse s . This is not only in the case of the Hungarian or European magic practice of today but also in the past and among tribal peoples. Apart from the above mentioned three factors of incantations in the case of prayers there is a fourth one as well. This is the intermediary which I call C. /The supernatural beings of Christianity or any other "higher power"/. The prayer is not addressed to anything that is to be influenced, but to the intermediary: A asks C to influence B. This A -» B -»C relationship is a religious relationshi p. In the case of blessing s or curses an intermediary is employed to fulfill the wish, but the person telling the incantation does not turn to C, but to B while referring to C. In the sense of "influencing B" the magic relationship is also expressed in blessings and curses. c I call this B relationship magi co-religious relatio nshi p . These texts which are religious in structure and content can only be delineated from incantations on the basis of functional criteria: prayers /blessings, curses/ in the role of incantations - used as the tools of magic - have to be regarded as incantations. It is especially characteristic of the more complicated incantations that the same text contains elements which on a formal basis can be regarded as incantations, prayers, or blessings, etc. alike. The simple magic or religious forms - the simplest, direct expressions of the magic or religious relationship /I.I., II. 1., XIV. 1-41./ - can be substituted for each other. Often they express the same belief content in one of the above forms under exactly the same circumstances /"illness, disappear", "God, make the illness disappear"/.
