As an introduction,, the author quotes lines from a 1550 ecclesiastical register which show that in the middle of the 16th century there was a school in Tapolca in Zala County {,,Secunda vicaria Thapolcha. Thapolcha, dominus Anthonius vicearchidiaconus. Ibidem Benedictus rector altaris. Hie alias luit schola particulariaf!) sed modo vacat"). Furthermore, the author proves that a school must already have existed in Tapolca in the 14th and 15th centuries. On one hand this is supported by data enumerated in the study showing a dynamic urban development from the 14th to the 15th century as a result of which Tapolca became one of the most important settlements (,, oppidum") in the Balaton Highlands. On the other hand, a large number of students from this area studied in foreign universities. (Between 1383 and 1491 ten students from Tapolca studied at the University of Vienna and one in Padua. It thus appears that the medieval Tapolca school belonged to the parish of the market-town and in its establishment and functioning the proprietary Carthusian Order here played no role. Nevertheless, the Order at the same time ensured a possibility of study for youths of the market-town and thus provided a way for their social improvement. The Tapolca school mentioned in the 1550 ecclesiastical register was empty and no longer functioned; it fell victim to intensifying Turkish attacks in the Balaton Highlands beginning in the thirties of the 16th century. As a result of this, for approximately one and a half centuries nothing is heard about elementary education in the settlement which paid double taxes.
