be sustained. The Emperor's regiments had to move backwards in the direction of Vienna where they dispersed, and the Transdanubian region's nobles gave in to Thököly. The Turks occupied the Szigetköz, enclosed the fortresses of Raab and Komárom, and started the siege of Vienna with then­main force. The military situation, however, changed after the successfully-fought battle of Kahlenberg (12th of September), and those, who had recently surrendered, attacked the already-defeated aggressors. First to awake were some of the nobles and borderfortresses: the Bat­thyánys and Miklós Draskovich Lord Chief Justice killed the Turkish army co-ordinate to them, and the guards of Veszprém - on the 24th of Septem­ber - carried out a successful raid on the region of Székesfehérvár and Pal­ota. Most of the Transdanubian region's soldiers and civic population, however, doubted the rumors about the failure of Kara Mustafa, and, on the basis of their historical experience, counted either on the return of the Turkish, or on a new Hapsburg-Turkish peace-treaty. 67
