SAVARIA AVAS MEGYEI MÚZEUMOK ÉRTESÍTŐJE, 30 Szombathely, 2006 KISS ROÓZ ILONA KERÁMIÁI DABÓCZI Dénes Nádasdy Ferenc Múzeum H-9600 Sárvár, Várkerület 1., Hungary E-mail: muzeum.sarvar@mail.globonet.hu THE CERAMICS OF ILONA KISS ROÓZ Ilona Kiss Roóz (b. 1920) is among the best potters of the later 20th century, the generation that followed Margit Kovács, István Gádor and Géza Gorka. Afier graduating from the College of Applied Arts in Budapest, she was a teaching assistant to István Gádor before setting up as an independent artist in 1952. She began with useful ware, vessels and mural pieces, but changed at the turn of the 1960s to the figurai work that has remained her hallmark. Her starting point is naturalistic, despite the strong stylization of her figures. Her invention ranges wide, from Adam and Eve, through circus, to profane matters such as the family. The basic rotated form lends stability. Her pieces are thrown to produce a conical/cylindrical body, so that the starting point is a vessel form. Her sculptures are not sculptural works and not modelled by hand, except for the details. She aims for anatomical accuracy. There is no characterization in the faces, which are similar, yet distinguishable, as the monograph on her work explains: "The proportions, distance, relative position, size and colour of eyes, nose, mouth and hair give similar heads different characters and resolve all apparent uniformity " (KOCZOGH 1986:8). The garments are marked by a certain richness of ornamentation, especially after the mid-1970s. Her works always betray conscious composition and symmetry. They are simple, even static, yet harmonious and imbued with humour, gaiety and often irony. The material is fine-ground pot fired at 960° C, painted in white, pale blue, turquoise, yellow ochre and other pastel shades. The six works illustrated, bought by the Savaria Museum in 1961, show the artists personal style and method of working had evolved by the beginning of the 1960s. These early works show strong, clear structure and homogenous, closed surfaces that lend them great inner force.
