3 The ground beetle fauna of Vas County (Western Hungary) (Coleoptera, Carabidae) — This summary article covers collection data for all ground beetle species found in the territory of Vas County or mentioned in faunistic literature, as well as still uncatalogued and unpublished ground beetle material in the Savaria Museum (Szombathely) and in the private collection of Ferenc NAGY (Szombathely) that originates from Vas County. Furthermore, there are some unpublished data for ground beetles in the collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. The authors have also employed research reports on the fauna of Ság Hill (KUTASi 2001b) and the monitoring surveys in the Bajánsenye district (SZÉL 2001), as well as the collection diary of the entomologist István ROZNER. Data in earlier faunistic literature and more recent collections yield a total of 347 known ground beetle species in Vas County. Disregarding species deleted from the Hungarian list (Carabus nitens, Nebria picicornis, N. jokischii, Oreonebria castanea, Notiophilus aquaticus, Molops ovipennis, Amara rufipes and A. erratica) and those now known to be erroneously reported (Bembidion velox, Ophonus brevicollis), 337 ground beetle species can be shown to occur. Despite earlier reports, research suggests that the following do not occur in the territory: Cicindela hy brida hy brida, Cylindera arenaria viennensis, Leistus terminatus, Blethisa multipunctata, Elaphrus ullrichii, Dyschirius rufipes, Elaphropus quadrisignatus, Bembidion cruciatum bualei, B. monticola, В. schueppelii, Sphodrus leucophthalmus, Amara ingenua, Pangus scaritides, Harpalus melancholicus, H. picipennis, H. smaragdinus, Ophonus cordatus, Amblystomus metallescens, A. niger, Cymindis axillaris, Microlestes corticalis and Lionychus quadrillum. Occurrence of these species in Vas County is uncertain and requires confirmation, as there is no voucher specimen available. With a few exceptions, these doubtful data come from the 1878 communication of Alfonz FREH and his manuscript catalogue closed in 1893, published by CSIKI in 1941. Of these, occurrences in Vas County of Cicindela hybrida hybrida, Leistus terminatus, Bembidion cruciatum bualei, Pangus scaritides, Harpalus melancholicus and Microlestes corticalis can be excluded or taken as extremely unlikely. 1 H-9700 Szombathely, Barátság u. 14.
