Bartosiewicz László: Állatmaradványok Sárszentlőrinc – Birkajárás középkori földvárából
László Bartosiewicz Animal remains from the medieval hill-fort of Sárszentlőrinc-Birkajárás (Western Hungary) The predominantly 14-15th century animal remains from the hill-fort of Sárszentlőrinc-Birkajárás show an overwhelming dominance of domestic animals (cattle over 50%, pig, sheep and poultry 12-15%) in the diet. In addition to the few deer and hare bones (5% of the identifiable remains), a pectoral fin ray fragment from a large Acipenserid fish is of special interest. Since the small, local Sió river would not have been a suitable habitat for such a large specimen, the bone fragment seems to be indicative of the importation of this from Paks, a major fishing town along the Danube, located some 20 km toward the east. This falls in line with the relatively high social status of the hill-forts inhabitants, also shown by archaeological finds.
