SZABÓ Sarolta Báthori István Múzeum EM300 Nyírbátor Károlyi Mihály u. 21. e-mail: sarolta.szabo@gmail.com Glass negatives in the Photography Collection of the Báthori István Museum (Nyírbátor) In the Photography Collection of the Báthori István Museum (Nyírbátor) 20,566 negatives were preserved, including 1,221 glass negatives that got into the museum in 1956-1958. They were found by Barnabás Szalontai, the director of the museum, in the attic of the Szabadság Square pharmacy. Photographs were made in the first third of the 20th century by Elek Vadász and Imre Nádas, the former proprietors of the pharmacy. Pictures were shot in the yard and terrace of the pharmacy. Most likely local people were depicted. We can see young women by alone or with their siblings, friends; young lads alone or in groups; farmers and civil servants. A large number of photographs depict soldiers, prisoners of war that dates these pictures to the time of the First World War. Frequently we see families, in most cases with the father missing or dressed in military uniform. Only three photos depict buildings of Nyírbátor and one the interior of the pharmacy with two men who should be identified as the proprietors. Today it is impossible to determine the aim of taking the photos. However, it is conspicuous that many of them is over- or under-exposed. We suggest that all these valuable pictures were born due to the hobby of the two pharmacists.
