Régészet - János Makkay: The Late Bronze Age hoard of Nadap
The Late Bronze Age hoard of Nadap pieces, and - I hope - there must exist in the Székesfehérvár Museum a contemporary description of the pieces, made by myself before the restoration. Here follows a complete list of the individual (reconstructed and other) pieces of the hoard, 338 items, without listing the larger or smaller bronze fragments (etc.). I think my job has come to an end with this description and hope that I was able to do my best during the collection and restoration of the hoard. Because I have never been an expert of Bronze Age matters, I have invited my old friend, Prof. George Eogan 6 to write the scholarly part of this publication on this extremely important hoard. List of objects 7 1-97. Weapons. 1—45. Defensive weapons and armours. 1. The helmet (Plate I). With minor differences, a close parallel is the Endrőd helmet 8 (shorter and undecorated knob, and perforation at the lower edge PETRES 1983. 57-58., Abb. la-b., JANKOVITS 1998/99. Fig.l: 2., JANKOVITS 2000. Abb. 1: 2.). 2-5. Four greaves (Plate II-IV.). 2-3. A full pair of greaves, made of sheet bronze (PETRES 1983. 58-60., Abb. 3.a-d., JANKOVITS 1997. Fig. 2.). 4. Two fragments of a greave made of sheet bronze, with trace of repair (PETRES 1983. Abb. 5a-b., JANKOVITS 1997. Fig. 3:1.). 5. Small fragment of a greave made of sheet bronze (PETRES 1983. Abb. 4a-b., JANKOVITS 1997. Fig. 3: 2.). 6-9. Shields (Plate IV-V.). 6. Fragment ofa shield, made of a thick sheet of bronze (PETRES 1983. 60., Abb. 8a-b.). A thorough investigation of the piece has excluded its interpretation as a part of a large bronze bowl. 7. Partly joining fragments of a large flat bronze object, a shield in all probability. 8-9. Several fragments of bronze strips, partly decorated with simple incisions. They probably were frames of oval leather - or wooden? - shields (PETRES 1983. 61., Abb. 9.; For similar shield strips of a reconstructed cuirass see JANKOVITS 2000. Abb. 5.). 10-30. Armour and parts of cuirasses (Plate V-VIII.). 10-13. Four fragments of rigid bronze, all of them are from the rim parts of pieces ofarmour (PETRES 1983. 61-62., Abb. 10a-h., photos and drawings.). Two of them (Nos. 12-13) might also be considered rim parts of large vessels, while in the case of Nos. 10-11 this seems improbable. " University of Dublin, Ireland. He was very kind to correct my manuscript. 7 The drawings were made by Ágoston Dékány. ° MAKKAY 1989. 181-182., with the history of the discovery and early interpretations, and PI. 28. The helmet of Endrőd was found in the river Körös in, or before 1874. 139
