Selfappreciation of the peasant in Csököly, their opinion about their traditions and the turn of their fortune (1900-1945) JUDIT KNÉZY This study is a hommage to the ethnographically well researched people of Csököly, a village in Somogy county. It examines the lifestyle of the villagers between 1900 and 1950 mainly in respect of their material culture. The first part describes shortly what the author got to know of the villagers lifestyle in the first part of the 20th century from her local sourches. It shows their attitude towards their traditions and the preservation of them. It also examines the efforts of the mainly younger generations to change to a more effective agriculture and to an improved lifeniveau. This study also gives a view of the relation-system of this mobile group: the people living nearby and also further away, the people of trade fairs, markets and feasting places. It shows a detailed picture of the family relations and the social structure among the residents. An other important aspect is the working relations with local farmers and the noble estates. The second part of the study examines the last period of the peasantal lifestyle with all its struggle and war casualities, deeds, casuality-list from the years between 1945 and 1949. These documents reveil the troubles of the rebuilding, the review and the re-allocation of working and farming tool, and the softenning of social troubles. The lists of warfare requisitions and other losses are very accurate: destroyed buildings , small and bigger animal handling, other foodstuff, etc. Different lists were made of the losses of thirteen peasant households. The later lists enlight much material aspect of rural lifestyle between the World Wars, describing the inventories, tools, representative supplies, (furniture, textilware, clothing, bowles, containers etc)
