Oak-hornbeam forests of the floodplains of the Drava river in Somogy, SW. Hungary BALÁZS KEVEY In this paper, the phytosociological characteristics of the oak-hornbeam forests occurring along the Somogy county, SW Hungary section of the Dráva river are analyzed using 50 vegetation records. According to the results, this association {Circaeo-Carpinetum) as interpreted by BORHIDI (2003) should be divided into four separate associations based on their habitat characteristics. The species compositions of the oak-hornbeam forests growing on gravelly fluvial soils, on sand, on loamy soils developed on loess, and on mesophilic floodplains are different. Since the most widespread type of the oak-hornbeam forests is the one growing on the floodplains, and thus resembling the hardwood gallery forests, I propose the original name of Circaeo-Carpinetum BORHIDI 2003 be applied only to this association. Due to the occurrence of some submediterranean species, the stands of Circaeo-Carpinetum-occurring on the Somogy county section of the Drava river floodplains are somewhat similar to the oak-hornbeam forests growing on sand (Fraxino pannonicae-Carpinetum) in the neighbouring Inner Somogy region. However, these plants play a subordinate role in the association. As a consequence, these stands are closest phytosociologically to the oak-hornbeam forests of the Sava plains and the Drava plain in Baranya county, and extend as far as Gyékényes along the river's floodplain.
