Szabó (1929-2010) JENŐ PAPP Dr. János Barna Szabó was born 11th October 1929 in Kisújszállás (Hungary), he completed his higher education at the L. Eötvös University, Budapest, graduated as zoologist. He fulfilled the scientific research fellow assignment at the National Public Health Institute (1956- 1978) and at the Semmelweis Medical University, Department of Public Health (1978-1988), both institutions at Budapest. Since September 1988 he was on disability pensioned. Deceased 15th April 2010 in Kiskunhalas, his mortal remains was cremated. In 1944-1945 he was member of the Hungarian military youth organization ('levente’ in Hungarian). In January-February 1945 he serviced in a war-airport in Germany. The horrible personal war-experiences made a lifelong traumatic influence in his mentality, later turning into paranoidy. J. B. Szabó was an experienced specialist of the proctotrupoid wasps. He has begun their research on dr. G. Szelényi’s (1904-1982) stimulation. As the active worker of the National Public Health Institute he involved himself in the study of different synantrop and synbovin dipterous flies. The creeping psychic and muddled disillusion (paranoia) in the prime of his life gradually washed-out his entomological activity - nevertheless he bacame one of esteemed and honoured member of the Hungarian entomology. He was awarded with the bronze degree of Imre Frivaldszky Medal by the Hungarian Entomological Society in 1963. Also awarded with the medal of "For Flood Prevention” in 1965 participating in the combat against flood-catastrophe of river Danube in 1964 by controlling and preventing mosquito- invasion. The academic honour Candidate of Biological Science (=PhD) given by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was obtained by him in 1967. The title of his dissertation is "Taxonomical, ecological and ethologi- cal studies on scelionid wasps of the Carpathian Basin (Hymenoptera, Proctotrupoidea, Scelionidae)” covering 261 pages completed with 78 figures. The number of his publication is 95 (of which several are with coauthors), see also the publication list before. His papers on proc- totrupid wasps were listed with a detailed account of his described taxa by Megyaszai & Thuróczy (1998); 22% of his new taxa (species, genera) proved to be synonyms.
