Preface to the volume UHERKOVICH Ákos In the year 1991 an Act was codified about designation of further national parks by the Hungarian Parliament. This law ordered the designation of Duna-Dráva National Park. The projected area should include three earlier landscape protection areas as Bares Juniper Woodland Landscape Protection Area, Béda-Karapancsa Landscape Protecion Area and Gemenc Lanscape Protection Area as well as some other protected areas, e. g. Lankóci forest, Zákány-Tölös hill and Cun-Szaporca backwater along the Dráva river. In Hungary we can find that the water quality of the rivers and other running waters became worse and worse, mainly in the past few decades. The water quality of the larger rivers is always also getting worse, first class of water can hardly occur. Dráva - mostly its upper Hungarian section - is one of the most unregulated rivers of Europe. Its river bed changes quickly and unexpectedly, new sand- and gravelbanks form and the high sandy riversides often collapse because of its undermining and transfer of the bed. The Hungarian-Croatian state border run very capriciously and there are many Hungarian areas in the right and several Croatian areas along the left riverside. Some years ago the border zone was practically restricted area, therefore the vegetation and wildlife was almost untouched. The Dráva river was a restricted area also for the scientific investigations in that period. This is why the living world was practically unknown disregarding the Bares Juniper Woodland from where about 200 plant and more than 2000 animal species were recorded (UHERKOVICH 1978, 1981, 1983, 1985). A few botanical studies are mostly unpublished from other areas of Dráva region. The living world of Béda-Karapancsa Landscape Protection Area was also studied and the results were published (UHERKOVICH 1992). The zoological investigation of Dráva region was organized by the Natural History Department of Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs and the Department of Ecology and Zoo-
