MAGYARORSZÁG HANGYADARAZSAI - VELVET ANTS OF HUNGARY (MUTILLIDAE) 101 7 (4) Head red (although sometimes very dark red) at least behind antennal base. 8 (9) Tubercle behind base of antennae obtuse, hardly visible (Fig. 46). Anterior margin of clypeus straight, with clearly visible broad depression. Mandibles tridentate, with small protrusion on inner side (Fig. 95). Process of mesosomal segment 1 medium-sized, projecting outward. Head below eyes, man­dibles, antennae, (except much paler pedicel and first three flagellomeres) pitch brown, head behind eyes and metasoma reddish brown, mesosoma black. Whole body with sparse long erect brownish setae. Setae on antennae, mandibles, clypeus and legs lighter. Metasoma with appressed black pubescence, posterior part of tergites with band of pale pubescence. Band on tergite 2 produced trian­gularly forward in middle, tergite 3 covered entirely by pale pubescence (Fig. 158). 6-11 mm. Mediterranean species, it is very frequent in Hungary on heavy soils (Fig. 6), somewhat rarer on definitely sandy areas. Known period of collection: 22. IV-09. XI. Distribution: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Turkey and North Africa (Egypt). Myrmilla (Myrmilla ) mutica (ANDRÉ, 1903) 9 (8) Tubercle behind base of antennae pointed, clearly visible (Fig. 45). 10 (11) Protrusion of mesosomal sternite 1 small, barely visible. Mandibles not widen­ing toward apex (Fig. 94). Anterior margin of clypeus straight, with narrow depression. Mandibles triden­tate, with obtuse protrusion on inner side Tubercle behind base of antennae large, pointed, rusty brown. Process of metasomal segment 1 small, pointed. Head red­dish brown to rusty brown, vertex often black with reddish brown spot on frons. Antennae reddish brown, darkening toward apex. Metasoma black or dark chest­nut brown but reddish brown underneath, mesosoma and legs reddish brown. Frons and mesosoma covered by brownish pubescence. Posterior part of each tergites with band of pale pubescence, band on tergite 2 not produced forward, band of pale pubescence on tergite 3 covering entire surface (Fig. 156). 7-9 mm. The species occurs in Eastern Mediterranean. In Hungary it is very rare, in all three females and one male were collected in Simontornya (Fig. 7). Known period of collection: 14. IV-8. X. Distribution: Albania, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Israel, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Syria, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. Myrmilla (Myrmilla ) lezginica (RADOSZKOWSKI, 1885) 11 (10) Protrusion of mesosomal sternite 1 pointed, clearly visible. Mandibles widening toward apex (Fig. 91). 12 (13) Inner side of metacoxa with tooth-like tubercle. Metasomal sternite 1 with long medial carina with spine-like process mesally. Clypeus with conspicuously deep smooth shiny depression flanked by high margin. Anterior margin of clypeus in middle roundly excised; anterior part of excision with small denticle. Mandibles tridentate, with small protrusion on inner edge at about middle. Tubercles behind base of antennae large, with apex black.
