Antal Tóth: Summary

ANTAL TÓTH: Summary The members of the old colony of Szentendre artists - established in 1926 - founded an association in 1928 under the name of Szentendre Painters' Society, The society as a legitimate professional-social organisation had to work according to the regulations of order No, 7700/1922, B.M.vn., which determined the frameworks of the work of associations. This regulation covered almost every detail of social associations and laid a special emphasis on the inner democratic forums of a society, the general assembly, which had to be called once a year while meetings had to be held as often as it was necessary. The minutes of the meetings had to be kept and they had to be sent to the supervisory authority, which was the district board or the town council according to the seat of the society. The minutes together with official letters or reports to the authorities written in the course of the year, etc, were placed and preserved in the record office. According to the information by the painters involved, these documents have disappeared. Nobody ever tried to find them though they were at the right place — in the record office of the town council of Szentendre, The lucky turn was due to the reorganisation of the archives, which was at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. As the documents were thoroughly moved, those in question turned up and the filing-clerks of Vac noticed them. They realised how important they are from the point of view of cultural history. The discovery was presented by Ferenc Horváth M. in one of the issues of Levéltári Szemle (Archival Review) in 1981. However, the news did not get to the professionals who were the most closely concerned, namely, the art historians of Szentendre. It was Tamás Schleininger, historian, with whose contribution the information got to the right persons who could work up the matter. György Sümegi s research work was also important. He besides examined the other files besides the minutes. Through his work, the documented history of the old colony of artists as well as that of Szentendre Painters' Society from the very beginning until 1951 became completed. The files refer to a organizationally well-determined part of the history of the painting of Szentendre but do not cover the whole. cf 197 >
