Antal Tóth: Summary
We have tried to publish the 'treasure finds' discovered ago more than 25 years several times. Now it can be realized through the sponsorship of Art Historian Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy. The volume consists of four units. It involves the facsimile reproductions, minor documents and a photo material. The first unit has the minutes of the meetings. The introduction was written by Tamás Schleininger, who tells us how the documents were lost then found in a lucky way—owing to the discipline of 20th century burocracy. Besides several clearing information, the original constitution together with its modifications can be read, which is important because earlier a mixed constitution extract was only known. The next part is the correspondence with authorities and private persons. It was György Sümegi, who, after the Archives of Vác, did the systématisation of the complex documentary material and classified them according to species, signing them with Roman or Arabic numbers. The register, which makes the use easier, is of high priority in the volume. The sporadic documents that turned up earlier can be found in chapter three together with their interpretations, that is, the previous studies written by Bálint Chikán and Judit Mazányi. The latter reveals that KUT (the artists' group named New Society of Artists) under the leadership of Miklós Rózsa wanted to acquire the artists' colony and tried to get it under their control—which is new information and it gives a new aspect to the relations of the people living inside and outside the colony. Summing up, the files document a closed period, give answer to several yet not all of the questions, and offer a good ground to further research. The forth unit of the volume contains photo documents in a variety which is richer than ever before. Among them we can see the reproduction of two writings that give exact information on the starting period of the artists's colony of Szentendre as well as on the dissolution of Szentendre Painters' Society, that is, on the beginning and the end. One is the register book of occupants kept from 1972 (the year of the reconstruction of the artists' colony) on one of whose pages Miklós Bánovszky wrote 1st June 1926 as the date of his moving in. This is the birthday of the artists' colony! The other is the clause on one of the pages of the cash book kept from 1942, which was realized on 31st July 1951. This date means the real dissolution of the society, when they cancelled its former legal position. Though the Szentendre Painters' Society was dissolved, the artists' colony survived, worked and could keep a partial autonomy in managing its inner matters. (f 1987?
