Tény, hogy elsősorban a figurális kompozíciók kötötték le figyelmét, illetve ezek szereztek számára ismertséget: két francia lap is közölte egy-egy aktképének reprodukcióját.' 2 Ujabb aktképek, bibliai jelenetek és portrék készültek ebben az időszakban (ío című о képének vázlata, Júdás, Jézus születése, Dr. Gesztesi Gyula portréja, Orosz nő portréja, Kisfiú arcképe, Szakállas önarckép, Egy szerelem szimbolikus története"). .. » 31 L'entretien mentionné ci-dessous qu'il donna à Gyula Gesztesi confirme également cette idée : Onódi adorait la forêt, Jeges moins, à lizon through French and Hungarian eyes unforgettable 'happy-sad' days almost always together. I still adore that melancholic forest so much that in my imagination I can nearly smell its clean, cool, forest air; walk this way and that along its quiet paths filled with autumn leaves on our way to Bas-breau and Uepine, admiring the winter sunshine in an ecstasy as it pours silvery light over the oaks and the red-yellow leaves still clinging to the trees.' 24 j Ernő Jeges summarized his activity with less commotion and fewer words in the letter he wrote to Antal Deli in the early spring of 1924: 'When we departed in Munich I did not take your words seriously. You said I would not be able to work for a year, and so it happened because with the exception of the few Barbizon pictures I really could not work because of my great poverty.'™ According to Onódi's о memoirs, Jeges went to Barbizon only for his sake: 'He was not attracted to landscape painting; he liked working on figurai compositions.'^ According to Gyula Gesztesi's above mentioned interview, Onódi loved the forest, Jeges not so much. He painted only six pictures in Barbizon. He was much more interested in figurai and, particularly, large compositions./ It is a fact that he concentrated mainly on figurai compositions and it was these that made him known: a reproduction of one of his nudes was published in two French papers. 32 More nudes, Biblical scenes and portraits followed in this period (the sketch of his picture /o; Judas, The Birth of Jesus, Portrait of Dr Gyula Gesztesi, Portrait of a Russian Woman, Portrait of a Boy, Self-portrait with Beard, Symbolic Story of a Love." j Ernő Jeges's landscape paintings have unjustly received
