SÁNDOR HAUSEL „...in which the religion is taught with freedom from one and the other side..” ESTABLISHMENT OF COMMON SCHOOLS IN NÓGRÁD COUNTY BETWEEN 1786 AND 1790 IN ERA OF JOSEPH II One of the most interesting attempts of the Josephinian educational affairs of the Hungarian enlightened despotism - although argued by the contemporaries - was the foundation of common schools. This ahead of its time „nationalization” of the school system was attempted in Nógrád County as well - between 1786-1790. First of all the elementary village schools were concerned. However, the only higher level school of the county, the Calvinist school in Losonc, was also considered to be converted into a common school. Nógrád County had a special characteristic: beside the few Calvinist schools the number of Lutheran schools was higher than the national average. To set up common schools in the midst of distrust between denominations required compromises and often rather complicated religions, social and economic debates. To elucidate the topic in question the documents of Josephinian administration of Nógrád County are available. 40
