ZOLTÁN IGOR KOMJÁTI THE IMPERIAL GARRISON STATIONED IN FÜLEK FORTRESS IN THE TIME OF ISTVÁN II. KOHÁRY'S GENERAL-CAPTAINCY (1667-1682) In the second half of the 17th century, the number of the Imperial soldiers considerably increased in the territory of the Hungarian Kingdom, as a few years after the Treaty of Vasvár had been closed the Austro-Turkish War of 1663-1664, the Court War Council wanted to swell the military regular troops coming from the Germano-Italian Empire again. The Imperial regular soldiers originated mainly from German territories took part in the fights in the Hungarian borderline areas not only as field troops, but also were attached for service to some border castles. A total of 200 Imperial musketeers also were stationed in the Citadel of Fülek Fortress situated in Nógrád County under the command of a captain. István II. Koháry had a partial authority over them, as their provisions, supplies, paying, reinforcements and commissions of their officers were always depended on the Court War Council. But apart from this, on certain occasions, the „refugee” counties set in Fülek provided them with all sorts of aliments, victuals and services in consideration of the mutual interest - the keep of the Fortress in Royal hand. The Imperial soldiers almost never left the territory of the Citadel, they never went together with the Hungarians on military raids and excursions. Due to the danger caused by the frequent Kurucian irruptions and advances, István Koháry was determined to appeal for raising the number of the musketeers of Fülek coming from Szendrő several times. This essay, based on expansive inland and outlandish archive sources, re-presents the life and accommodation of the Imperial troops stationed in Fülek Fortress, moreover, shows their connections with the civil inhabitants and the Hungarian soldiers, and due to this, it improves the scientific historical facts and knowledges formed about this 17th century market town and Royal border fortress in Nógrád County. 76
