LITERATURE FOR LISTENING STORIES OF GENESIS

This essay focuses on readings and literary interviews given by 20th century Hungarian poets and writers, preserved in the Media Collection of the Petőfi Literary Museum in Budapest. It looks at the way the collection was established in the 1960s. It shows how spoken word recordings of Mihály Babits, János Pilinszky, Lőrinc Szabó and Nobel Laureate Imre Kertész came into existence and were published. It discusses and characterizes the writers’ manner of reading aloud and the way their contemporaries remembered their voice. It demonstrates that these unique recordings belong to our cultural heritage and constitute an indispensable source of museology and of literary history. Just like manuscripts, photographs and personal objects, audio recordings of a writer form his cult and are an important source of literary cult research.
