ANDRÁS SZOMSZÉD THE MEMORY OF THE „BATTLE OF KISTERENYE” An undistinguished village had become a battlefield after the end of the First World War, when the world politics swept the Austro-Hungarian Empire away, and the nationalities tried to get even bigger parts from the territory of Hungary. The literature talks about the „Battle of Salgótarján”, but one of the most important battles of this almost one-month-long period was in Kisterenye, in 19-20* May of 1919, when the Czech forces made a pincér attack in the range of this small village. Kisterenye was built in the intersection of routes and living waters, so it was an ideal place to make multidirectional operations. Another importance of this battle is that not only regular forces, but local veterans also took part in the manoeuvers, who were recorded by a talented photographer, called Ödön Sztanek. As a local patriot who was born here, it is my obligation to perpetuate this almost forgotten action, because these soldiers were ready to give their lives for their homes and also for their country. Hungarian forces made a counter-attack on the 9th of May, from the area of Salgótarján. The leading of the 6th division stopped the attack, and settled in defense. The soldiers of the 6th division were changed by the forces of the 80th brigade. The Czech army attacked not in the center, but in the flanks, in the direction of Szécsény in the West, and to Pétervására in the East. Their action what was started with 4 battalion, became successful on the 18th of May. They occupied Pétervására and the smaller villages around, secured their flanks and got ready for the attack. The Czech army started marching from Pétervására to Ivád, Nádújfalu, Nemű and Kisterenye on the 18th of May. Their final purpose was to occupy Salgótarján. 123
