ISTVÁN KOHÁRY GENERAL-CAPTAIN OF FÜLEK AND THE WAR CORRESPONDENCE ON THE TURKS (1667-1682)

(Historical contributions to the history of the exchange of informations and the military intelligence in the 17th century

in Hungary)

This aim of this paper is to make István Koháry’s correspondence known who was the General-Captain of Fülek border castle situated in Nógrád County. The essay prepared for making use of the micro-film material of the Koháry family archive of the National Archive of Hungary and the original sources of the National Archive of Besztercebánya (Banská Bystrica, Slovakia) gives information the following answers: whence and from who István Koháry became aware of the war reports come from the surrounding area of the border castle (mainly from Nógrád, Gömör, Zólyom, Hont and Heves and Outer-Szolnok County); who and in what kind of way advised him of the news officially; and which were those persons who were acquainted by Koháry about the obtained informations.

At the same time, the essay also shows the role of István Koháry fulfilling in the intelligence and the forwarding the informations, and, morerover, in itselves is not only a compilation from the history of information-flood, but such a paper that presents the „microhistorical events” of the life of the Ottoman garrisons situated east from the Danube and their Hungarian adversaries. By means of these little stories, the Ottoman era of Hungary can be better and deeper understood in its historical, military and lifestyle historical relations, which from the local historians might also do researches.
