Life on the Bulgarian Lands (The Bulgarian gardeners of Zagyvapálfalva) by Miklós Zoltán Fodor

In the late 19th century several thousands of Bulgarians started vegetable production in Hungary. Their horticulture techniques had a considerable influence and changed garden-tillage practices in Hungary and also affected eating habits.

In the lands of Zagyvapálfalva nowadays belonging to Salgótarján due to favourable conditions (arable plain area, available water for irrigation, the industrial area as a serious consumer market for agricultural products) several Bulgarians from the vicinity of Velika Tarnovo began gardening in the early 1910s and in the course of the 20th century some of them settled down here.

In this yearbook article the cultivation methods of the bygone local Bulgarian gardens and the way of life of Bulgarians adapting to local conditions have been reconstructed mainly by using personal recollections.
