XVm. KÖTET A NÓGRÁD MEGYEI MÚZEUMOK ÉVKÖNYVE 1993 TERMÉSZETTUDOMÁNY NATURAL SCIENCES Présence of Chalicotherium grande (BLAINVILLE, 1849) (Mammalia, Perissodactyla) in the Paris Valley at Nógrágszakál (North Hungary, Nógrád County) János Hír 1.Introduction The Paris Valley (P6:rish) is a left-hand side branch creeck of the Ipoly River which cuts through between Litke and Nógrádszakái villages (fig. 2., 13.). In May of 1991 a fossil molar was found in the valley by Mr. János Licskó amateur mineralogist who gave the matériái for the Natur-Historical Collection of the Nógrád County Museums. It was registered under the inventary noumber: 92.1 2. Description The find is an M2 dext. molar of a young Chalicotherium grande. The applied nomenclature is after Zapfe H. (1979), the measurements are after the generál paleontological practice (Fig. 1.). On the mesial margin of the tooth-crown there is a well developed anterocingulum before the protocone and paracone, but not continued before the protostyle. The paracone is situated in the anterocenral part of the crown. It is always connected with a branch of the protostyle. The protoconule touches the surface of the protocone. The posterior segment of the tooth-crown is characterized by a 3branched fork-like stucture. The centre of it is the metacone (Fig. 3a.). Measurements: L: 44.6, W a : 42.1, W p : 42.3 mm 3. A survery ofthe Hungárián Chalicotherium finds In the territory of Hungary the Chalicotheroid fossils are rare (Fig. 2.) and never described in a summary. 3a Szentendre Material: Chalicotherium grande M2 dext molar of a senile specimen (Fig. 3b). Measurements: L: 38.0, Wa: 37.5, Wp: 37.1 mm Piacing: Coll. ofthe Hungárián Geol. Inst. : V-13080 Description: the tooth-crown is strongly worned. The lingual half of the anterocingulum is intact. The protoconule is divided from the protocone. The locality of Szentendre, Cseresznyés-árok is described by Kordos L. (1982,1986). He put it ontó the boundary ofthe MN 7-8 zones (Fig. 12.). 3b Csákvár Material: Macrotherium cf. grande p4 sin. (Fig. 7.). Measurements: L: 25.7, Wa: 15.5, Wp: 17.4 mm Piacing: Coll. ofthe Hungárián Geol. Inst: V-11375 Description: the premolar is very peculiar, extremely large sized (Fig. 8.). The paraconid is well developed, but the metaconid is exteremely reduced, integrated intő the protolophid. The externa! cingulum is missing. Kretzoi M (1952) commented: "...neither belongs to Chalicotherium goldfussi 233
