Feiler József: The relic of the Danubian mounted God’s Cult from Komarom
A Monument of the "Danubian Rider God" from Komárom József Feiler A marble roundel broken into two pieces found in a sarcophagus in the area of the pharmacy of Komárom during the third decade of this century. The roundel which is 92 millimetres in diameter and 6 milliletres in thickness is a possesion of Kuny Domokos Museum (Tata). Its inventory number is: 94.61.1. The relief is cursorily executed and probably was completed by painting that is not preserved. The representation indicates that it is a monument of the so called "Danubian Rider God". Around the roundel there is a 3-4-millimetre wide frame and the surface is divided into three parts with two parallel horizontal lines. In the upper register there is a bust of triad. More details are not recognisable. The principal field is divided into three parts with two columns. In the upper part of the left section there is a bust (Sol?) and under it is a figure turning right and holding upward a long-shaped object in his right hand. There are two bearded horsemen with Phrygian cap and long cloak standing face-to-face in the central field. The left man raises his right hand and his horse is trampling on a long-shaped object, probably on a man. Two huge serpents lie horizontally above the horsemen. Between the horsemen there is a hardly recognisable figure, a goddes in front of whom there is a monopodium standing. Behind the right horseman in the right upper corner is a small antropomorphous figure (Victoria?). In the upper part of the right section is a bust (Luna?) under which is a female figure dressed in a long garment with a girdle. She is holding her right arm up to her lips and her left is along her body. She can be identified with the figure of Nemesis. The bottom register contains hardly recognisable figures. From left to right they are: a bird like figure (cock?), a vessel (crater?), a human figure turning right with outstretched hands toward a hardly recognisable thing (an altar?) and an animal jumping right (lion?). The roundel is a fourth monument of the "cult of the Danubian Rider God" from the area of Brigetio. The three others are made of marble too, but they contain less iconographical elements. The dating and interpretation of the monuments of the Danubian Rider God are not solved in a satisfactory way up to the present. It is mainly due to the lack of written sources and the high variety of iconographical elements on the monuments. The only way to gain useful information about the cult is analysing the relation of the main iconographical elements. 356
