Régészet - Kövecses-Varga Etelka: Két esztergomi leletmentés késő középkori lábbeli anyagának elemzése
These two finds can be found in the archeologycal collection of the Balassa Bálint Museum. The rescuing of the finds was carried out by dr. István Horváth, the director of the museum. The finds date probabely from the turn of the 16th-17th centuries. We can find among them mostly soles and parts of soles but we can also find independent iron fittings, counter parts and clipings. On the finds we can see some details concerning the technique of manufacturing the footwear and some traces of wearing. From these and from the shape of the finds we can imaginarry reconstruct the footwear. In elaborating the paper the author relied on Katalin Melis's (Mrs. írás) archeologyc and Alice Gáborján's etnographycal studies. Both are elaborations of systematic character of similar finds. According to these in the two Esztergom finds the following types of footwear can be traced: sandals, slips, slippers, shoes boots and foot clouts. As to the manufacturing of these types of footwear we can find data in the documents of the corresponding guilds. Analysing the finds we could study the manufacturing process of the footwear without heel, of those with only one layer of sole and of those fastened with iron fittings and rivets. On the basis of all these evidences we determined the finds as originating from the workshop of a so called „German shoemaker" or from that of a boot-maker. 40
