The Artist's Colony of Szolnok 1902-2002

a teacher at the Budapest School of Arts in 1945. An exhibition was held in commemoration of him in Budapest in 1966. MIHÁLY GÁCSI (1926-1987) He was a student of Endre Domanovszky, Gyula Hincz and Károly Koffán at the Budapest School of Arts. He worked in Szolnok between 1956 and 1974. He was awarded the Munkácsy Prize in 1974. His graphics were exhibited at several Hungarian exhibitions where he won a number of prizes. ÁRPÁD GECSE (1899-1999) He was a student of Ede Balló at the Budapest School of Arts. After this he went to Italy and studied painting under V. de Stefani in Venice. Upon returning to Hungary he worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok for a few years before settling in his native village of Alattyán. LÁSZLÓ HANGAY SZABÓ (1953) László Hangay Szabó was born in 1953 in Eger. He completed his studies at the College of Fine Arts in 1979 as a student of Iván Szabó. Then he settled down in Szolnok. He started his artistic career as a teacher, but was working as a sculptor as well. Later on he spent his energy and talent on creative work. He has reached noteworthy achievements on the field of the art of numismatics. He has taken part in several county and nation-wide exhibitions and — like his father the sculptor László Szabó — the Dante Biennale of Ravenna. KÁROLY LÁSZLÓ HÁY (1907-1961) He was taught by István Csók, István Réti and János Vaszary at the Budapest School of Arts. From 1927 he displayed his works at several Hungarian and foreign exhibitions. He became acquainted with new ideas in Berlin in 1931. He painted using powerful colours in an expressionistic style. He worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok for many years. Generally, he showed his landscapes and drawings at exhibitions. LÁSZLÓ HEGEDŰS (1870-1911) Painter. He studied in Munich, Vienna and Paris before becoming a student at the Benczúr Master School. He went on a vocational trip to Spain in 1899. He became a teacher at the Budapest School of Arts in 1903 and spent a year in Rome in 1904. He won the Gold Medal at the International Ex­hibition in Milan in 1905. He obtained an honorary diploma for his three works in London in 1909. He was a founder of the Artists' Colony of Szolnok. KÁLMÁN ISTÓKOVICS (1898-1990) Painter and graphic artist. He studied in Vienna and Milan and at the Budapest School of Arts as a student of István Csók and Gyula Rudnay. After he went on vocational trips to Paris and Italy. He was a sizar at the Collegium Hungaricum in Rome between 1929 and 1930. He held his first one-man show at the Ernst Museum in 1931. His reputation came mostly from his Italian exhibitions but his engravings are well-known in other European countries, the U.S.A. and Japan. He was a participant in the Biennale of Venice several times. He worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok during the sum­mer. He also painted historical and ecclesiastic works. BÉLA IVÁNYI GRÜNWALD (1867-1940) He was a student of Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz. He studied painting under Hackl at the Aca­demy in Munich and then at the Julian Academy in Paris. Later he returned to Munich and joined Si­mon Hollósy's circle. He won the Gold Medal at the Barcelona World Exhibition in 1930. He was a member of the Nagybánya Artists' Colony before moving to Szolnok. Later he was one of the foun­ding members of Kecskemét Artists' Colony. PÁL JÁVOR (1880-1923) He studied in Budapest, Szolnok and Paris. He painted portraits, interiors and nudes. He combined the strong colours of impressionism with fixed shaping. 149
