NÁNDOR KATONA (1864-1932) Painter. He was a student of László Mednyánszky in Upper Northern Hungary, and later in Budapest and Paris. He took part in exhibitions at the Art Gallery from the1890s, showing his paintings of mountains and pines. Emotional elements prevail in his landscapes. He was awarded several honours both in Hungary and abroad. KÁROLY KERNSTOK (1873-1940) He started to gain the rudiments of painting from his uncle, József Kernstok, but later became a student of József Feichtinger at the Budapest School of Arts and Crafts. He was one of Simon Hollósy's students in Munich in 1892, but the next year he went to Paris to study at the Julian Academy for three years. After returning to Hungary he studied at the Benczúr Masters School for three yeas. At the beginning of his career he painted realistic and naturalistic pictures in the style of Courbet, Millet and Meunier, but later he was influenced by the impressionists. He cut himself adrift from colourism to realize his reflections in more inornate forms. He exhibited with the MIÉNK and NYOLCAK groups. His most mature and characteristic style took shape after 1911, making him a prominent pioneer of modern art. JÁNOS KLÉH (1881-1919) He studied at the School of Decorative Arts under Ede Balló and László Hegedűs and then worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok, heavily influenced by realism. He lived in Szolnok from 1908 until his death. JÓZSEF KOSZTA (1861-1949) This Kossuth Prize winning, laureate painter was one of the greatest artists of lowland painting. He studied at the Budapest, Munich and Vienna Academies. He worked near Szolnok several times at the beginning of the century, having an atelier at the Artists' Colony for a while, but later he bought a smallholding near Szentes and worked there. HEINRICH LANG (1838-1891) He came to Szolnok from Munich in 1860 or 1861, after which he studied in Paris. He returned in 1868. His wife, Tina Blau also worked here several times. ESZTER MATTION I (1902-1993) She was a student of Gyula Rudnay at the Budapest School of Arts. Her colours became stronger, in likeness to Vilmos Aba-Novák. She invented a new manner of building adornment, known as 'painted stone', which marked an epoch in her career. Painted stone is a mixture of fresco and mosaic. She worked as a guest member of the the Artists' Colony of Szolnok in the 30s and 40s, later becoming an ordinary member. LÁSZLÓ MEDNYÁNSZKY (1852-1919) He is one of the greatest turn of the century Hungarian Painters. He visited Italy and France and wandered all over Hungary. His restless nature also drove him to Szolnok, visiting the city several times. It is not surprising then that he signed the petition to form an artists' colony in Szolnok. His landscapes are as important as his paintings of social outcasts which show his deep public-spiritedness, as well as the staggering horrors of the Great War. LÁSZLÓ MEGGYES (1928) He studied painting at the Budapest School of Arts as a student of István Szőnyi, Endre Domanovszky and Gyula Hincz. He has been a member of the Artists' Colony of Szolnok since 1957. He has been on instructional trips to Prague and Italy. He endeavours to express new and modern forms of the Szolnok tradition. 150
