The Artist's Colony of Szolnok 1902-2002

FERENC CHIOVINI (1899-1981) He was a student of Ede Balló and Gyula Rudnay at the Budapest School of Arts. He was a member of the Artists' Colony of Szolnok until his death. He won the Munkácsy Prize in 1966 and the Meri­ted Artists Prize in 1974. Ecclesiastic and historical frescos, subject pictures taken from ordinary life and portraits were his main themes. Ideas of form and colour dominate his works. He painted the frescos of Jászszentandrás parish church with Vilmos Aba-Novák in 1933. MIKLÓS CZINÓBER (1899-1984) Painter. He studied at the Budapest School of Arts and at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok . He showed his collection of more than eighty works in Szolnok in 1925. He later moved to Paris were he wor­ked until his death. LAJOS DEÁK-ÉBNER (1850-1934) He studied at the Munich Academy of Arts from 1869 and then moved to Paris. He visited Szolnok for the first time in 1874, presumably influenced by Pettenkofen, and then spent his summers in Szol­nok and his winters in Paris for abut a decade. He painted the frescos of Tihany Abbey with Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely. ALADÁR EDVI-ILLÉS (1870-1958) Painter and graphic artist. He studied as a student of János Greguss and Bertalan Székely at the School of Decorative Arts in Budapest between 1888 and 1893. Later he studied at the Julian Academy in Paris between 1893 and 1895, after which he went to London to study English water colour painting. He went to Italy as a sizar in 1897. From 1891 he held many exhibitions at the Art Gallery, display­ing his well-shaped, intimate and realistic aquarelles. He was a member of the teaching staff at the Budapest School of Arts from 1903. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Art Gallery in 1916, the Munkácsy Prize in 1925, an honour in Barcelona and the National Gold Medal in 1939. He was al­so awarded the honour of Merited Artist of the Hungarian Peoples' Republic in 1958. MAGDOLNA FAZEKAS (1933) She finished studying at the Budapest School of Arts in 1958. Since this time she has worked at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok. Her works have been exhibited at several Hungarian exhibitions and also in Tallinn, Zurich, Sofia and Paris. ADOLF FÉNYES (1867-1945) He was one of the greatest Hungarian realist painters. He studied under Bertalan Székely and then Max Thedy in Weimar between 1887 and 1890. He was a student at the Julian Academy in Paris. He won honour at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 and was awarded the Gran Premio at the Barce­lona World Exhibition. He was one of the original signatories of the petition which lead to the foun­dation of the Szolnok Artists'Colony. He visited the colony every summer until his death, the pictures painted here showing an increased use of colour and brightness. DÉNES FÖRSTNER (1901-1945) Painter and graphic artist. He was István Réti's student . He was influenced by Béla Uitz's early gra­phic works, and later by István Szőnyi's art. In 1924 he went to Italy as a sizar. He held his first one­man show in 1928 in Berlin. After this he took part in various Hungarian exhibitions. In 1934 he was awarded the Ede Balló Prize. He also worked as an illustrator. Alongside his postimpressionistic pain­ting he was a successful etcher. He mainly painted portraits and landscapes. KÁLMÁN GÁBORJÁN I SZABÓ (1897-1955) Graphic artist. He was a student of János Vaszary at the Budapest School of Arts. His excellent wood­carvings are characterized by soberness and popular taste. He transferred modern monumentalism into Hungarian. He was awarded a scholarship from the Szinyei Society in 1922. He held several exhi­bitions in Hungary and Switzerland. His ex librises and illustrations are also well-known. He became 148
