The Artist's Colony of Szolnok 1902-2002

LÁSZLÓ BÉNYI (1909) He started studying painting at Vilmos Aba-Novák's free school. He was a student of the Budapest School of Arts between 1930 and 1936. His works were exhibited at several Hungarian exhibitions and he was exhibited in Bulgaria, France, Germany and the U.S.A. During the course of his activity he became involved with the the Artists' Colony of Szolnok on several occasions. FERENC BERÉNYI (1927) He was a student of Jenő Barcsay and Endre Domanovszky at the Budapest School of Arts. He lived alternately in Szolnok and Budapest. He combined lowland painting with the discipline of construc­tivism in his art. He was awarded the Munkácsy Prize in 1968. AURÉL BERNÁTH (1895-1982) Painter and graphic artist. He is one of the most important figures in 20th-century Hungarian art. He was a student of János Thorma and István Réti in Nagybánya in 1915. He lived in Vienna between 1921 and 1922 and then in Berlin between 1923 and 1926 where he experimented with the expressionist style. He held an exhibition with Béni Ferenczy at the Sturm in Berlin in 1924. He later settled in Bu­dapest. He held a great one-man show at the Ernst Museum in 1956 and later he exhibited at the Biennale in Venice. He worked as a teacher at the Budapest School of Arts for many years. SÁNDOR BIHARI (1855-1906) He worked in Vienna from 1876 where he matriculated from the Academy of Fine Arts. He went to Paris in 1883 and continued his studies as a student of J.P. Laurens. Impressionism and plein-air exer­cised great influence on his painting. He worked in Szolnok with Lajos Deák-Ébner between 1885 and 1886. He took part in the formation of the Artists' Colony of Szolnok in 1900. He was awarded the József Ferenc Prize in 1896 and was also awarded several foreign honours. He worked in Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany. LÁSZLÓ BOKROS (1928) He finished studying at the Budapest School of Arts in 1956. He worked at the the Artists' Colony of Szolnok until quite recently. He is primarily a painter but is also engaged in graphics, pottery and the planning of wall hangings. ZOLTÁN BORBEREKI KOVÁCS (1907-1992) Painter and sculptor. He was a student of János Vaszary and István Csók. Vilmos Aba-Novák encou­raged him to model in Szolnok. He lived in South Africa since 1949. ANDOR BORUTH (1873-1955) Painter. He studied as a student of Simon Hollósy in Munich and then at the Julian Academy in Pa­ris for five years. He studied Velasquez in Madrid. He returned home in 1900 and was awarded the most important prizes of the Art Gallery. He painted portraits of well-known Hungarian scientists for the Academy of Sciences. He also painted ecclesiastic pictures. He worked in an academic manner. He was a member of the Benczúr Society. SÁNDOR BOTOS (1921) This Szolnok born painter studied at the Budapest School of Arts between 1939 and 1944. His mas­ter was Vilmos Aba-Novák. He lived at the Artists' Colony of Szolnok between 1949 and 1959 and then moved to Budapest. He was awarded the Munkácsy Prize in 1955. PÁL BÖHM (1839-1905) After his adventurous debut he opened an arts school in Arad where he studied László Paál and others. He painted his best subject pictures in Szolnok between 1873 and 1875 after which he moved to Munich, where he worked until his death. 147
