Who's Hungarian? - Identity Awareness in Scholars in Hungary Vilmos Gál As is manifest from the biographies of academicians, and even according to the leading principles listed at the beginning of the work (place of birth, mother tongue, schooling, work within Hungary), only here and there can we obtain a (not wholly) exact answer to the question of which of our scholars consider themselves to be of Hungarian descent. Perhaps it is easier to decide on the question of the case of Hungarian identity. Scholars whose mother tongue is Hungarian, who are proud of their Hungarian origin, who attended Hungarian schools, and who have spent a degree of their time working in Hungary are in the majority, although the significant portion of their life's work ties them to foreign lands. Even in the case of Fülöp Lénárd, a man of German descent yet born in Hungary and a participant in Hungarian education, the influence of Hungarian culture on the scholar's path through life can be well documented. In the case of Róbert Bárány and Richard Zsigmondy it is however evident that they were only slightly affected by the Hungarian language, education or Hungarian culture despite their incontrovertibly Hungarian descent. On the other hand, in the case of the members of the great generation of Jewish Hungarian (György Békésy, János Neumann, Dénes Gábor, Jenő Wigner and Ede Teller)
