Tóth If one examines the individuals accused of witchcraft in Central Europe, it transpires that there are very few foreigners among them; in the overwhelming majority of cases "the witch is familiar in their own community." According to Eva Pócs this is natural, because "as an institution that explained disasters and released tensions, European witchcraft of the modern age was destined to dissipate tension within the community." Another side to the problem is signalled in that alongside the high number of insiders in the community accused of witchcraft we do after all discover a fair number of "outsider" aliens as well. Indeed, quite independently of witchcraft trials the condition of 18 lh-century Hungarian demography is precisely an example of there being many "aliens" within one country. And among these we find a good number who find themselves involved in witchcraft and/or sorcery trials. A good part of these are settlers arriving in the unpopulated or sparsely populated areas of Hungary starting from Bavaria via Thuringia, the hereditary provinces of Austria, Bohemia and Moravia or simply from Upper Hungary. Another part comprised people who due to their nomadic lifestyle always remained alien: soldiers, the fortune-hunting poor, refugees from war or the wandering Gypsy population.
