"Catching up with rushing times..." The beginnings of advertising posters 1885-1920 Judit Ré dey The first part of a series of 12 exhibitions was put on show in the Pulszky hall of the Hungarian National Museum under the title Catching up with rushing times... It offered an excellent selection of the first substantial period of the Hungarian art of posters. Following a short a representation of works connected to Historicism, therefore leisurely detailed and ever more pathos-ridden as we approach the millenary exhibition, the organiser of the exhibition, István Ihász turned to street art and illustrated the turn of the century in a peculiar way. As a result of an economic upswing, the commencement of industrial mass production, urbanisation and the concomitant rising of the middle-class as well as the development of printing technology, industry, commerce and art went hand in hand. Initially closer to the art of painting, producing posters developed into a separate branch of art at the beginning of the 20 th century as it was time by time enrichened with new graphic designs. The artists represented with their works, numbering 93, is too long to be listed: Dezső Bér, Mihály Bíró, Géza Faragó, Imre Földes, Jenő Haranghy, Lipót Sátori, Márton Tuszkay, Miklós Vadász, Gusztáv Végh, etc. The atmosphere of the exhibition was heightened by films on show that with the accompanying pleasant music recalled the tone of contemporary Budapest.
