Intentions and implementation The Bocskai exhibition in the Hungarian National Museum József Róbert Szvitek The exhibition titled "For Beautious Freedom, for the Benefit of the Hungarians" was opened in the Hungarian National Museum on 15 October 2004, on the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Álmosd. Our institution, in this way, was among the first institutions to commemorate the uprising led by István Bocskai. The exhibition aimed at representing the events of the era through the person of István Bocskai, and illustrate his role with contemporary objects, inscriptions in English and Hungarian for the visitors and installations. Conceived in this idea, the exhibition started with the childhood and youth of István Bocskai, which was followed by the events of the Fifteen Years' War, and then the antecedents of the uprising, the events of the uprising and the death of the prince. At the end of the exhibition, the wear named after Bocskai and popular in the first half of the 20th century were represented with samples and photographs. First of all, our aim was to display objects and documents that were made and written in the era since only they can represent reality as it was in the time. Consequently, we tried to avoid historicist representations and the object material of the 19th century. This, however, proved to be a futile attempt as we were bound by a relatively small number of objects and representations which could survive the centuries. We believe and think that we managed to organise a worthy exhibition in commemoration of the only independence movement in Hungarian history that ended in success.
