Horváth - Zoltán Huszár The City of Pécs, considered by the present Baranya County Museums Directorate as its original precursor, opened its first permanent exhibition in 1904. The authors survey the chronological history of an important collection, well-known both in Hungary and internationally. Over the century the number of artefacts has grown from some 5,000 to nearly 800,000. The museum organisation, which has exhibition centres all over Pécs and the county of Baranya, possesses and cultivates collections from the most important museum fields. At the moment the collections of the BCMD are in the keeping of the Natural History, Archaeology, Modern and Contemporary History, Ethnographical and Fine and Applied Art Sections of the county organisation's Janus Pannonius Museum. Another organic part of the BCMD is the Dorottya Kanizsai Museum (Mohács), which is the central museum for national collections pertaining to the Southern Slavs of Hungary - Croatians, Serbs and Slovenes. The study investigates the vertical formation of the museum, the fundament of which is the institute's annual report and almanac. Both of the authors - historian-museologists have spent many years in the institute under inspection, and so can reinforce their findings with personal experience.
