The few articles that were published about him mainly deal with some of his exhibitions. The present paper attempts to present a tiny section of his work, but we can safely say that it was the most significant period of his life. The period of the Great War played a determinative role both on his later works and his artistic development and career. Not only did the war bring a nearly fatal injury to his life, but provided him an opportunity to become well-known, and to create a documentarist, high artistic quality thematic scope that forms a separate period of his works. Through the pieces created during World War One that reflect his contemplative way of life, we can learn the creative methods of this multi-sided artist, we can get an insight into the deepest layers of his personality, and we can follow the analyst-creative process that came from his above the average psychological skills. Zádor’s pieces of graphic art offer outstanding artistic experiences with the balance of historic credibility; they are characterised by their artistic expression, their analyst viewpoint, and they are unprecedented in expression and techniques. In his book, The Diary of a War Painter, he describes how these pieces were born in detail, and the circumstances in which they were created. Very few people know that Zádor was not only a painter and graphic artist, but, at the same time, a documentary war photographer who focused the objective of his camera on the theme with the eye of a historian, and with the soul of an artist he constructed his photos, which were aids in creating his “report pictures” as he called them. The aim of this paper is to present the First World War period of Zádor’s life and works in accordance with their weight in his oeuvre, in the beauty and depth of the creative process. 276
