ZOLTÁN CZIER The fossil plant locality Vasas, situated in Mecsek Mountains (south-west Hungary) is known in literature since the 18 th Century. The material of the old collections, originating from underground mining exploitation, unfortunately is lost. However, new and interesting fossil plant specimens were collected in the period 1988 - 1998, from Vasas quarry. They originate from the lacustrine faciès sequence of the coal-bearing deposits, Hettangian in age. Konijnenburg-Van Cittert, Cladophlebis sp., are the taxa described. The most common element of the Vasas flora is the fern-tree Clathropteris meniscioides (Brongniart) Brongniart. This species is very characteristic also for the lower Jurassic Suncuius flora of Pädurea Craiului Mountains in the west Rumania. A lot of other taxa, common for these localities, also argue the resemblance between these floras. This is explained with a shallow sedimentation basin that existed in the early Jurassic between the Mecsek Mountains and the Pädurea Craiului ("King Forest") Mountains. Both the areas are developed in Gresten-like faciès, but they resemble each other much more than with the typical Gresten facies in Austria.
