Among the birds and other animals on the ground even from the Far East or from Africa there are some which have been already known since ancient times and play an important role in European beliefs. Others, however, received a specific role only in the Hungarian and Central European cultures. Thus, the 17 t h century customs and beliefs are revealed in these poems. The 90 creatures presented with lyrical technique portray the even-during­wartime animal and nature-loving man for the posterity. 396
