more than a book, since one can insert not only texts and pictures, but videos and audios as well. A multimedia program is interactive: it is far quicker to get to the information and relies on the creativity of the user in how the data is reached, and what is selected and omitted. It is indeed a challenge to disseminate archaeological knowledge in this way since it offers several supplementary tools to the traditional archaeological interpretative techniques, as in the case of animated reconstructions, experimental demonstrations, related film inserts, fantasy designs and so on. Producing a DVD is much cheaper than publishing a book and is also of importance in so much as sophisticated computer applications can arouse young people's interest more effectively than other more conventional media. To disseminate our latest archaeologogical results concerning the neolithic of our region, we tried to utilize this new technology. It was an aim with a didactic element, containing the ulterior motive of trying to awake interest in history, as a subject taught in schools, as well as raise children's awareness of their cultural heritage. Fortunately, because we found partners in Holland and in Spain who were thinking along the same lines as we were, our goals were achieved within the framework of the European Commission-sponsored international Early Farmers in Europe project. Jointly we produced, among several other things 3, an interactive digital CD 6 and a webside. 7 The CD-ROM, designed for use in educational institutions, provided up-to-date information about the neolithic of our region. The archaeological part, summarising the latest results of the neolithic research of our region to 2002, discussed the neolithic in 10 main topics, such as settlement structures, material culture, social system etc. This was supplemented with a lexicon made by students of the local teacher training college. The CD was bilingual, provided with sound and video inserts and also contained additional teaching activities. It was published in 2003 as a supplement to our museum's yearbook. 8 During the last five years our knowledge about the neolithic of our region and especially about its key site at Füzesabony-Gubakút has increased considerably. We have analysed large parts of the finds, made different kinds of statistical analysis and come to some interesting conclusions in various fields. We now possess detailed information on the site that now allows us to make different kinds of reconstructions, both spatial and historical. Fortunately the computer technology capable of 3D animation has also further improved, allowing us to make a much better multimedia program than before. 5 VENTO MIR Enriqueta - GUÉRIN Pierre 2002. 6 The program was created with the Macromedia Shockwave Studio program by Gábor Bányai, with contributions from László Domboróczki and József Kozáry. 7 Part of the website, developed by Fokko Dijkstra, is still working: www.earlyfarmers.net. 8 DOMBORÓCZKI László 2003. 13
