Péter Bán Game Management and Its Development on the Estates of the Diocese of Eger at the Beginning of the Episcopacy of Károly Eszterházy In 1764, on the 26 th day an unnamed month, the first entry was made in the minutes for the meetings initiated for the purpose of dealing with matters concerning hunting and the livestock in the forests of the diocese of Eger. On reading the accounts of the discussions that took place and seeing the innovative actions that were carried out as a result one gains in insight into the plans bishop Károly Eszterházy had for a number of territories under his jurisdiction, and the exact changes he had in mind. The minutes contained in this particular study concern one particular branch of the economy, game management. Although the proceedings were not led by Károly Eszterházy himself, it was he nevertheless who called the meetings, which were conducted in a manner very similar to other official sittings, where any relevant information was gathered prior to making the necessary decision. This unusual way of sharing knowledge and expertise may well have contributed to János Kögl, who had up to that point only been keeper at the pheasant garden in Nagytalya, being named chief gamekeeper on the estate during the course of 1764. As becomes apparent from the documents published here he came to the job with clear views as to how game management should take place. 592
