Most of the wooden chests used in the county were made during the course of the 19

th century. The smooth planed surfaces of the older chests were to be superceded by their brightly painted, carved equivalents. In the examples we have in the county one can see the stylistic progression going on in the Komárom chests, the work of the Debrecen carpenters, and the related work from the southern Alföld, as well as the floral, painted chests of the Sátoraljaújhely and Zemplén carpenters. 200
