Bakó Ferenc: Beszámoló a múzeumi szervezet 1968. évi tudományos és népművelési munkájáról

entomological collecting work of Mr. Jablonkay who compiled 7,239 specimens mainly from the Mátra Mountain region and the surroundings. The result of Mr. Nagy's work is 59 birds and small mammals, which form the material of next year's new permanent exhibition. In the Eger Museum area Mr. Rozsnyói has scrutinized the paleontological sites which have been known for several decades, and succeeded in rescuing the skeleton of a siren in the lower Oligocène layer at the brick-works of Eger. Mr. Rozsnyói also organized a minor expedition to the site of Dédestapolcsány-Gulyadéllő where he collected some 600 imprints with very well preserved remains of palms among them. One part of the archeological research work was planned excavations, the other major part consisted of rescuing finds. Planned excavations were conducted at two sites, both under the supervision of Mr. Kovács: one was started at the Arpadian temple of Tarnaszentmária, the other was the phase planned for 1968 within the excavation project of Sirok Castle that had been started earlier. The outdoor area in front of the castle-gates was opened up at Sirok at this time. Of outstanding importance among rescue excavations was the opening up of the medieval ruins of a church near the mill of Nagytálya-Berki. During this work started in 1967 Mr. Kovács identified five architectural periods and opened up 162 graves within the church in addition to the 40 ones found last year. Mr. Kovács also opened up a grave without furniture in Béla utca in Hatvan which may be dated back hypothetically to the early Middle Ages. Mr. Szabó has opened up an early Avar grave in Fő utca at Ape; a late Avar grave at Lőrinci-Feneketlen tó (Bottomless Lake) ; the remains of a late German grave at Tarnaméra-Urak; the pits of a Sarmatian settlement in the centre of Besenyőtelek; and the pits of an Early Bronze Age settlement at Szihalom. Mr. Nagy has excavated six late Avar graves at Sirok-Csörgő ; remains of Early Iron Age settlements at Sirok-Szentivándomb ; bones from graves at the time of the Conquer at EgerHajdúhegy; the pits of an Early Iron Age and a Celtic settlement at Kerecsend-Fácános; a 16-17-century common grave at Hatvan; and he made observations in the area of Pázmánd, a medieval village near Demjén. In addition to the activities listed above, archeological excavations were conducted in County Heves by other institutions as well. Delegated by the Historical Museum of the Hungarian National Museum, Mr. Gyula Török conducted authentication excavations in the Avar cemetery that was opened up before World War II at Visznek-Kecskedomb ; also within the scope of a Historical Museum project, Mr. Sándor Soproni carried on the excavation of a Roman watch-tower and of the buildings found by the tower at Hatvan-Nagygombos; within the scope of scheduled work of the National Monuments Inspectorate, Mr. Károly Kozák and Mr. András Pálóczi Horváth have carried on the archeological excavation of the sections of Eger Castle programmed for this year; the opening up of the graves of the Arpadian cemetery round the apse of the Romanesque church has been completed for the most part, and the excavation of the western side of Szép Bastion has been started. Objects and themes were collected in the ethnographic branch. Objects of ethnographic interest collected in the territory of the County were placed in the museums of Eger and Gyöngyös. The ethnographical collection of the Museum of Eger was enriched by 276 pieces in 1968, most of this collecting work having been carried out by Miss Kapros and Mr. Kecskés, museologists. The important items of the year's new acquisitions are pieces of furniture, of equipment and implements for furnishing the peasant house at Kisnána Castle that had been purchased by the Museum; further implements to be added to the Village Museum planned for Mikófalva; a young peasant woman's complete dress and other textiles from Bükkszék; pieces of national costumes from Szajla and Felnémet; glassware from Tarnaörs. The Mátra Museum launched a campaign "One Piece for the Museum" in the villages of the 13
