SZÍ LAS 1 The Rococo Garden of the Fuorcontrast Manor - Using Paintings as Sources Since Miklós Szmrecsányi’s first mention of the Fuorcontrast Manor, built by the bishop Earl Ferenc Barkóczy in the mid- 1740s as a summer retreat, the former splendour of this place and the reasons of its subsequent decay were discussed by many others for various reasons. First Szmrecsányi wrote about his research findings between 1932 and 1937, followed by Pál Voit in 1969-1972, who was the author of the chapters on Eger’s Baroque architecture in the publication entitled The Monuments of Heves County. We then learnt some details about life in the manor from Kornél Bárdos, Géza Entz and István Bitskey, who primarily used records from the Minorite and Franciscan chronicles called Historia Domus as sources. In 1996 István Sugár published the inventory of the manors luxurious furnishings. Sugár attempted to determine the position of the manor, which used to be located within the forests of the hilly areas around Felsőtárkány. A fairly good thesis was also written and subsequently published on the topic (by Virág B. Illés). Apart from the inventory, published by Sugár, we do not have a lot of written sources about the rococo building and the gardens, which were demolished at Károly Eszterházy’s request. Its “fairy castle” appearance, as referred to at the time, is known from a few period paintings. Initial researches mentioned two, while later findings identified four or five paintings as references, which help us recall this masterpiece of Eger’s baroque-rococo architecture and garden landscaping. 94
