SZERENCS BOOKPLATES One of the most significant collections belonging to the Zemplén Museum in Szerencs is that made up of about 40,000 items of small printed matter, most of which are bookplates. The collection, and indeed the basis of the whole museum, was formed by a bequest given by local dentist László Petrikovits (1901-1972). The bookplate is a replicated piece of graphics printed on a small piece of paper, which, when stuck into a volume owned by a book collector or library, indicated either its attachment to a collection or the name of its particular owner. There was a time when such distinguishing features included the owner's coat of arms, followed at a later date by the inclusion of pictorial devices designed to reflect the character and tastes of the individual in question. The reproduction of such bookplates was dependent on a number of different printing procedures (woodcut, copperplate, dry-point, steel engraving, lithography, stereotype). In cases where the artist had worked the printing block himself, we can talk in terms of original prints. From the beginning of the 20th century collectors of small graphics in Hungary would organize themselves into clubs or associations. In 1959 the Small Graphics Appreciation Society was formed, which also published its own journal, Kisgrafika (Small Graphics). Members adopted the traditional method of swapping as their means of improving their collections. The Szerencs Museum enjoys good relations with bookplate collectors both at home and abroad. In addition to its 18,h-l 9th century bookplates the collection is made up mainly of 20th century examples. Of particular interest is the collection belonging to Szerencs-bom graphic artist Antal Fery, which has formed the basis of a number of exhibitions. 60
