SZÁZADBAN PAAR PÉTER POZSONYI POSTAMESTER SZÁMADÁSAI ALAPJÁN ABSTRACT: István Kenyeres: The Royal Post in the Sixteenth Century based on the Report of Péter Paar, Postmaster of Pozsony (Bratislava). The founding of the post, as an organization responsible for the reporting of news, is inextricably tied with Habsburg rule. These original posts were military and it was only with the consolida­tion of Habsburg rule that they became a civil, that is to say, part of a real postal serv­ice. Of the various posts which existed in royal Hungary the Transdanubian lines came under the jurisdiction of the Austrian ruler, whilst the Petronell-Komárom line along the banks of the Danube and the postal road connecting Lower and Upper Hungary between Pozsony and Kassa (Kosice) were in the administrative area belonging to the Postmaster of Pozsony. The position of postmaster of Pozsony was carried out by Péter Paar and it is from his accounts between the years 1558 and 1580 that one can gain a picture of the so-called “Hungarian Posts“. From the accounts one discovers the names of the delivery points on two of the postal roads, as well as the names of the postmas­ters, their salaries and the number of horses used. On the basis of the postal notes (Postzettel) the author was able to collect data on the everyday workings of the postal service and to calculate the time scales involved in sending express letters from Kassa or Pozsony to Vienna.
