Lengyel György: Késő-paleolit telep Miskolc határában (Rózsás-hegy)
20 GYÖRGY LENGYEL LATE PALAEOLITHIC SITE NEAR MISKOLC Rózsás Hill is situated near Miskolc in north east Hungary. The site is found on the top of the hill at the height of 208 metre above see level. The site was excavated in 1988; the excavator identified the assemblage as Late Palaeolithic industiy having Magdalenian like typological and technological features (Ringer 1991). A detailed lithic technology study has been made of the assemblage, without the identification of the archaeological culture (Lengyel 2000), however typological features are similar to the Central European Epiaurignacian (Bachner et al 1996, Kozlowski 1996, Street and Terberger 1999). The raw materials for tool making at the site were mainly gathered from neighboring areas. The knapping system applied shows strict blade and bladelet production. The blades and bladelets were struck off from unipolar cores, mainly after the preparation of a single flake removal. In a few cases, especially on large blades, en éperon and faceted butts refer to more thorough preparation on the striking platform of the cores. The raw materials coming from longer distances have higher proportion of blades and blade tools than flakes and flake tools. The farthermost identified raw material came from South Poland, which is Jurassic flint, and there are also some pieces of erratic flints in the assemblage. It seems the site was occupied for the purpose of some unknown special activity in which the thick endscrapers made of local raw materials were in use. Blade/lets were brought from long distance, even from 200 km, and kept and used as blanks for general and multifunctional tools.
